Many therapists will display initials after their name. These initials could represent their qualifications, or show that they are a member of a particular organisation or association. We have made this list as comprehensive as possible at the time of going to print.

A

AA The Astrological Association. They produce four major publications including The Journal and Correlation. They also organise seminars on all aspects of astrology and hold an annual conference.
AAAT Association of Anthroposophical Art Therapists
AAMT Association for the Advancement of Meridian Therapies. Non-profit making organisation. There are no restrictions to membership.
AAPA Aromatherapy and Allied Practitioners' Association. Member organisation of the Aromatherapy Organisations Council. All therapists who belong to the AOC member association have trained to the standards defined in the AOC Core Curriculum, are fully insured to practise and abide by a code of Ethics, Conduct and Practice.
Accredited Teacher of the Feldenkrais Method Accredited Teachers have completed 160 hours of training over a three and a half to four year period.
ACE Academy of Crystal Enlightenment. Two-year part-time diploma course.
ACHO The Affiliation of Crystal Healing Organisations was formed in 1988 by a group of crystal healing organisations to promote training and competence in crystal healing therapy and to act as a nationally recognised representative body for crystal healing. Lic (Licentiate Member): Licentiates have completed at least Year 1 of their professional training and are licensed to work professionally. M (Member, Fully Qualified) or G (Graduate): Practitioners who have completed their certificated training. TM (Teaching Member) FM (Founder), F (Fellow), P (Principal) Founder or principal of the organisation.
ACP The Association of Chiropodists and Podiatrists. A national professional body acknowledged by the Department of Health and represented in the NHS reference group for regulations of the Chiropody/Podiatry profession. A practitioner must graduate from a recognised educational establishments and abide by a strict code of practice.
ACTA Auricular  Candle Therapy Association. Aims and Objectives: To agree a code of practice / ethics with existing Ear Candle Therapists which will be upheld by all members of the association. To agree a complaints investigation & disciplinary procedure which will be maintained by all members of the A.C.T.A.
ADISFS Associate Diploma from the International Schools of Feng Shui.
AET Association of Eurhythmy Therapists
AFT Association for Family Therapy and Systemic Practice in the UK. Consists of over 1,500 members who are multi-disciplinary.
AHTI Association of Holistic Therapies International. Member organisation of the Aromatherapy Organisations Council. All therapists who belong to the AOC member association have trained to the standards defined in the AOC Core Curriculum, are fully insured to practise and abide by a code of Ethics, Conduct and Practice.
AIN Association Internationale de Numerologues (AIN) and the Connaissance School of Numerology. Members must agree to abide by the Association's Rules and Code of Ethics.
Alliance of Chiropody and Podiatry Practitioners Alliance of Chiropody and Podiatry Practitioners. The Alliance works to protect the rights of all private sector practitioners. Provide insurance for members.
ALTT Association of Light Touch Therapists. Founded in 1988 it is affiliated to the British Complementary Medicine Association. They must have a certificate of training and have Public Liability and Indemnity Insurance. Members work to a Code of Conduct as laid down by the BCMA.

AMBRA Associate Member of the British Reflexology Association (The British Reflexology Association). Founded in 1985 to act as a representative body for persons practising the method of Reflexology as a profession and for students training in the method. The Association also aims to help promote the practice of Reflexology in Great Britain and Abroad.
AMT Association of Meridian Energy Therapists.
ANA Anthroposophical Nurses Association
ANLP Association for Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Was formed in 1985 as a non-profit making organisation. Associate Membership is open to anyone interested in NLP and Full Membership is open to holders of recognised NLP qualifications.
ANM Association of Natural Medicine. They are a member organisation of the Aromatherapy Organisations Council. All therapists who belong to the AOC member association have trained to the standards defined in the AOC Core Curriculum, are fully insured to practise and abide by a code of Ethics, Conduct and Practice.
AOC Aromatherapy Organisations Council. All therapists who belong to the AOC member association have trained to the standards defined in the AOC Core Curriculum, are fully insured to practise and abide by a code of Ethics, Conduct and Practice.
APA The Association of Professional Astrologers. They are the only astrological organisation who offer professional astrological insurance for its members, to be accepted for insurance they would have agreed to abide by its Code of Ethics.
APMT The Association of Professional Music Therapists
APNT Association of Physical and Natural Therapists. They are a member organisation of the Aromatherapy Organisations Council.

AQCH Association of Qualified Curative Hypnotherapists. A registered charity (No.294512).

ASIACT Art and Science International Academy of Colour Technology.
ASK The Association of Systematic Kinesiology. ASK is a registered charity, and was established in 1985, to promote high standards of training and adherence to a strict Code of Ethics and Practice, and operate a disciplinary mechanism to handle any complaints.
Association of Osteomyology Association of Osteomyology. First formed in 1993 as an umbrella organisation to run course for manual therapists who wished to have a higher degree of expertise.
ATH Association for Therapeutic Healers. Courses and professional training programmes for healers.
ATI Alexander Technique International. ATI General Member - anyone who supports the purpose of ATI. Teaching Member - member who has either i). been assessed and sponsored by three ATI Sponsoring Members, or ii). By holding an equivalent teaching certificate granted by another professional Alexander organisation which has been recognised by ATI.

B

B.OstMed Bachelor of Osteopathic Medicine. A five year full time undergraduate degree which will include professional registration.
BAAM British Association of Anger Management. BAAM is a professional body of experts, consultants, counsellors and trainers in the fields of anger management.
BAAT BABCP British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies.
BABTAC The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology. All Members' qualifications are vetted to ensure they meet with national/international requirements. As a full or specific skills member of BABTAC, the therapist is covered for all treatments accepted by BABTAC under their group insurance.
BAcC British Acupuncture Council. Formerly the Council for Acupuncture). There is no government legislation in the UK covering acupuncture. The BAcC believes practitioners should have at least three years full time (or part-time equivalent) of acupuncture training.
BAHA British Association of Healing Associations. An umbrella Group for over 20 Healing Associations with a Code of Conduct and Complaints and Disciplinary Procedures.
BANT British Association of Nutritional Therapists. Established in 1997 as a professional governing body for Nutritional Therapists. It is run by an unpaid governing council.
BAP British Association of Psychotherapists. All members are governed by the Association's Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. The BAP is one of the founder members of the British Confederation of Psychotherapist, a national registration body.
BAPS British Astrological and Psychic Society. The society was founded in 1976 by Russell Grant. They have a strict code of ethics and conduct which all consultant members must adhere to.
BAS The British Autogenics Society. Member of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), the International Committee for the co-ordination of the clinical application and teaching of Autogenic Training and Therapy (ICAT), The European Association for Psychotherapy (EAP), and the European Committee for Advanced Analytic Autogenic Therapy (ECAAT).
Bates Association The Bates Association. Affiliate body of the Institute for Complementary Health.
BAVA British Association for Vedic Astrology. They are a non-profit making organisation whose aim is to promote knowledge of Vedic Astrology.
BCA British Chiropractic Association.
BCMA British Complementary Medicine Association.
BCNO British College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy.
BDA British Dietitic Association. Established in 1936 to provide training and facilities for State Registered Dieticians.
BFMP British Federation of Massage Practitioners. Voluntary professional organisation founded in 1994. Membership and insurance for practitioners who follow Code of Ethics and Practice.
BHA British Hypnotherapy Association. Founded in 1958, they only admit to their register practitioners who have had at least four years of training which includes human relations, sexology, psychodynamics, psychotherapy and hypnotherapy.
Practitioners must maintain high standards or competence and ethics in their work to remain on the register.
Bi-Aura Foundation Bi-Aura Foundation. Only members of the Bi-Aura Foundation are entitled to use the logo and trademark. They agree to adhere to a Code of Conduct, Ethics and Practice. The Foundation is also a member of the British Complementary Medical Association.
BIBH The Buteyko Institute of Breathing and Health. The professional body representing practitioners throughout the World. Non-profit organisation committed to improving health.
BIH British Institute of Hypnotherapy. Non-profit making organisation committed to the highest standards of ethical practice and professional competence and who are completely independent of all training organisations or school registers.
BIMT British Institute of Magnetic Therapy.
Biodanza UK Biodanza UK.
BIRP Bach International Register of Practitioners.
BJS British Johrei Society (BJS) Certificate in Johrei Practice. It takes 3 years to fully qualify as a Therapeutic Johrei Practitioner. After the first year, practitioners can obtain insurance status to incorporate Johrei into their existing practice.
BKSIYTA BKS Iyengar Yoga Teachers' Association of the UK. Four levels of teacher are recognised: Introductory, Intermediate Junior, Intermediate Senior and Advanced. Teachers are only permitted to teach those postures included in the syllabus for which they have qualified. Only teachers who hold the BKSIYTA teaching certificate are allowed to call themselves Iyengar Yoga Teachers.
BMAS British Medical Acupuncture Society. Formed in 1980 as an association of medical practitioners interested in acupuncture. They are a registered charity.
BMTC British Massage Therapy Council. Established in 1992 to maintain and regulate a Code of Ethics and Practice for Massage Therapy. BNF British Nutrition Foundation. The Foundation influences all in the food chain, government, the professions and the media. They are a charitable organisation which raises funds from the food industry and government.
BOND British School of Nurturing Doulas. It was founded in 1999. They are dedicated to improving maternity care through working towards a recognised and reliable standard of attitude, education and skill in the doulas they train.
BOWTECH The Bowen Association UK. Established in November 1997 it is the European arm of the Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia. Ensure that practitioners adhere to the Association's code of ethics.
BRA British Reflexology Association. Founded in 1985 to act as a representative body for persons practising the method of Reflexology as a profession and for students training in the method. The Association also aims to help promote the practice of Reflexology in Great Britain and Abroad.
British Chiropody and Podiatry Association British Chiropody and Podiatry Association. Members have completed a two-year distance learning or one-year full-time course and use the initials MSSCh. FSSCh. Or MBChA, which stand for Member or Fellow of the British Chiropody and Podiatry Association.
British Society of Dowsers The British Society of Dowsers was founded in 1933 by Colonel A H Bell who was President of the Society until 1964. It is now a Registered Charity No. 2154580 and a Company Limited by Guarantee, Registered No. 2154580.
BRS British Rebirth Society. Affiliated to the Institute for Complementary Medicine. All practitioners are subject to the Society's Code of Ethics and Practice. The Practitioner categories are (P) Practitioner - Who have been in practice for some time and trained. (AP) Apprentice Practitioner's who are undergoing training with the guidance of a BRS Practitioner or Trainer Practitioner.
BSc (Hons) Osteopathic Medicine Four-year full time course leading to practitioner status in osteopathy.
BSCH British Society of Clinical Hypnosis. Membership demands high standards of training and ethical practice. Practitioners must have acquired the requisite Professional and Clinical training in the major aspects of Psychology, Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy. The London College of Clinical Hypnosis (LCCH) is the recognised training faculty of the BSCH.
BSMT British Society for Music Therapy (originally the Society for Music Therapy and Remedial Music)
BTAA Bowen Technique Academy Austrailia.
BTER Bowen Therapists European Register. Member of the British Complementary Medicine Association and members must adhere to a Code of Conduct and Ethics.
BVA The British Voice Association is a charitable organisation established in 1986.
BWY British Wheel of Yoga. Their teaching diploma is recognised both in Britain and abroad and is a part-time course which lasts for about two and a half years.

C.Biol Chartered Biologist.
CABCH Certificate in Hypnotherapy and Hypnohealing.
Cert Ed Certificate of Education - training qualification.
Certified Hellerwork Practitioner Practitioner Certification is granted by Hellerwork International (HWI) who define the terms and standards for all Certified Hellerwork Practitioners, who are recognised by the letters CHP.
Certified RolferCertification issued by The Rolf Institute - the sole certifying body for Rolfers. The Institute sets Ethics, Standards of Practice and Continuing Education/Public Workshops.
CHA Canine Hydrotherapy Association.
CHP Certified Hellerwork Practitioner. Certification is granted by Hellerwork International (HWI) who define the terms and standards for all Certified Hellerwork Practitioners.
CIBTAC Confederation of International Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology.
CIMI Certified Infant Massage Instructor.
CKORE Clinical Kinesiology Organization for Research and Education.
CMA The Colour Therapy Association. An independent organisation who are non-profit making. The CTA offers Full Members insurance.
CNM College of Naturopathic Medicine.
CPSM Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine.
CRAH Central Register of Advanced Hypnotherapists. Non-profit making organisation instituted in 1991 to make available a public register of practitioners who have undergone full training by N-SHAP (Parent Training Facility - National School of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy).
CRN Council for Responsible Nutrition. The Association of leading dietary supplement companies. Formed in 1979. Their mission statement is to promote and protect the European interests of members by creating a favourable political, legislative and operational environment.
CSP Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.
CSTA Craniosacral Therapy Association. Members must successfully have completed an accredited course in Craniosacral Therapy. All practitioners must adhere to a strict code of ethics.
CTA Colour Therapy Association. Full members to the CTA have insurance cover and must be a qualified colour therapist holding a recognised colour therapy diploma either from the UK or oversees.
CYBT Yoga Biomedical Trust. Registered charity founded in 1983

EAP European Association for Psychotherapy.
ECAAT The European Committee for Advanced Analytic Autogenic Therapy.
ECBS The European College of Bowen Studies. Training therapists in the Bowen Technique since 1994.
ECHPA European Herbal Practitioners Association. An umbrella organisation of RCHM who are working towards statutory registration for herbal medicine.
EDA Eating Orders Association. Entirely funded by charitable sources.
EHA European Hellerwork Association.
ESIPF English Societe de L'Institute Pierre Franchomme. They are a member organisation of the Aromatherapy Organisations Council. FChs Fellow of The Society of Chiropodists & Podiatrists. A qualification appropriate to state registration (or EU equivalent) remains a pre-requisite for membership. To reach this standard they must complete an approved three year full time course, leading to a BSc degree in podiatry.
FCPod (Surg) Fellow of the College of Podiatrists of The Society of Chiropodists & Podiatrists. A qualification appropriate to state registration (or EU equivalent) remains a pre-requisite for membership. To reach this standard they must complete an approved three year full time course, leading to a BSc degree in podiatry.
Feldenkrais Guild UK Accredited Teachers have completed 160 hours of training over a three and a half to four year period.
FET Foundation for Emotional Therapy. Registered as a charity since 1993. Therapists subscribe to a Code of Ethics and Practice to maintain standards.
FGNI Fellow of the Guild of Naturopathic Iridologists. The Guild is the leading professional body for qualified iridologists in the UK.
FHOM The Faculty of Homeopathy.
FHS Fellow - An experienced member who has made a significant contribution.
FHT Federation of Holistic Therapists. All members of the FHT are strictly bound by a Code of Ethics that contains procedures of dismissal if a member is found guilty of unprofessional or related misconduct. The FHT also provides its members with a code of practice that many countries have adopted as the standard for the industry.
FIM Foundation for Integrated Medicine.
FIRCH Fellow of the International Register of Consultant Herbalists and Homoeopaths.
First Degree Reiki First Attunement, able to work on oneself and friends and family.
FPC Foundation for Psychotherapy and Counselling. Formerly the Institute of Psychotherapy and Counselling, they are an Organisational Member of the UK Council for Psychotherapy in the Psychodynamic and Psychoanalytic Section.
FTA Floatation Tank Association. The purposes of the FTA are: the maintenance of a Code of Practice ensuring safe and ethical operation of floatation facilities. To provide a UK/Eire network of high standard public float facilities, which abide by a code of practice.

G

GBC Graduate of Bates College.
GCC General Chiropractic Council. The UK wide statutory body with regulatory powers, established by the Chiropractors Act 1994. From 14 June 2001 the title of 'chiropractor' has been protected by law and it is a criminal offence, liable to prosecution, to describe oneself as any sort of chiropractor without being registered with the GCC.
GCP Guild of Complementary Practitioners. Members must hold, or are training to obtain, an acceptable qualification in Anatomy & Physiology. Honorary Member - awarded for contribution to the Guild and/or Complementary Medicine of particular merit. Full Member - open to graduates and practitioners who satisfy the entry requirements set by the Guild in one or more Complementary Therapy. Associate Member - open to graduates and practitioners in one or more Complementary Therapy whose training and experience may not fully satisfy the entry requirements for Full Membership. Student Member - any student studying a course recognised by the Guild.
GCRCH The General Council and Register of Consultant Herbalists. Founded in 1960 by the directors of the British Herbal Union as an organisation with its origins in the early part of this century. Upon its inception, the General Council and Register of Consultant Herbalists founded the Register of Herbalists and the Register of Homoeopathic Practitioners, with the aim of ensuring skilled, ethical and professional care. Now known as International Register of Consultant Herbalists and Homoeopaths.
GCRN General Council and Register of Naturopaths. The GCRN was officially incorporated in 1965 as an independent registering body, but can trace its roots back to 1925 and the formation of the Nature Cure Society of Great Britain. The Register maintains a Code of Professional Conduct, and lays down minimum standards of training and clinical practice.
GHR General Hypnotherapy Register. Is the registering Agency for The General Hypnotherapy Standards Council. Established following Department of Health guidelines.
GHSC General Hypnotherapy Standards Council. Comprises of an Advisory Board made up of renowned and experienced practitioners and representatives from numerous Professional Hypnotherapy Organisations. They oversee the criteria for the ongoing Registration of practitioners within the GHR.
GICHT Graduate of the Institute of Crystal and Gem Therapists.
GNI Guild of Naturopathic Iridiologists International. Members are entitled to use the letters FGNI, MGNI, MRNI depending on level of registration. They must adhere to Code of Conduct, Ethics and Practice.
GOsC General Osteopathic Council. In 1993, the Osteopaths Acts was passed to establish GOSc a single governing body. Practitioners must hold a recognised qualification from an accredited school. They have a high standard of ethical and clinical practice.
GOSH Geometrics of Self Healing. Two-year Crystal Therapy Diploma.
GPBT Guild of Professional Beauty Therapists Limited: trade body for the UK's professional beauty salons.

H

HMD Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine. Hoffman Institute UK
Hoffman Institute UK Recommended internationally by health and education professionals, therapists and management consultants.
Holographic Repatterning Association The Holographic Repatterning Association have minimum standards of training, and hold a register of practitioners.
HS Hypnotherapy Society. The professional body maintain good standards for hypnotherapists and trainers. The society is an Organisational Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), and as such, is bound by that organisation's Code of Ethics and Complaints Procedure.
HSIS Health Supplements Information Service.
HWI Hellerwork International: grantor of the annual Practitioner Certification; defines the terms and standards for all Certified Hellerwork Practitioners, who are recognised by the letters CHP.

I

IAC International Association of Colour. Founded in 1984. Affiliated to ICM, BHMA, The Indian Board of Alternative Medicines and Colour for Health Guild Inc. New Zealand. Full member MIAC comply with the IAC Code of Ethics.
IACHT Institute of Advanced Crystal Healers. They are a training body for the promotion of Crystal Gem and other Vibrational Methods of Healing.
IAIM International Association of Infant Massage.
ICAK International College of Applied Kinesiology ICAT International Committee for the co-ordination of the clinical application and teaching of Autogenic Training and Therapy.
ICCH International College of Crystal Healing.
ICGT Institute of Crystal & Gem Therapists. Founded in 1985, they offer a two-year, part-time course. Covering the ACHO/OCN Core Curriculum.
ICHT International Council of Holistic Therapies. Member of FHT. All members of the FHT are strictly bound by a Code of Ethics that contains procedures of dismissal if a member is found guilty of unprofessional or related misconduct. The FHT also provides its members with a code of practice that many countries have adopted as the standard for the industry.
IEA International Ergonomics Association. They are governed by the Council with representatives from the federated societies.
IEB International Examination Board.
IFA International Federation of Aromatherapists. They are a member organisation of the Aromatherapy Organisations Council.

IFPA The International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists.
IFPA was formed on 1st April 2002 as a result of the joining together of members from three leading associations - the Register of Qualified Aromatherapists, the International Federation of Aromatherapists and the International Society of Professional Aromatherapists. It is a democratic practitioner-led professional association and a registered charity.
IFR International Federation of Reflexology.
IGA International Graphology Association. They are the only accredited Association offering a professional graphology course.
IHAF International Holistic Aromatherapy Foundation. Member organisation of the Aromatherapy Organisations Council. All therapists who belong to the AOC member association have trained to the standards defined in the AOC Core Curriculum, are fully insured to practise and abide by a code of Ethics, Conduct and Practice.
IIHHT International Institute of Health and Holistic Therapies.
Independent Midwives Organisation Independent Midwives Association. Founded by a group of independent midwives in 1985.
Institute of Chiropodists Institute of Chiropodists. Podiatrist's courses are accredited by the Open and Distance Learning Quality Council.
Institute of Indian Head Massage Institute of Indian Massage. Membership is open to all therapists who have studied and successfully completed an examination to the Institute's recognised standard. Members may use the designating letters IHM and the Institute logo.
Institute of Phytobiophysics The Institute of Phytobiophysics was established in 1990 and was affiliated to the Open International University for Complementary Medicine in 1992. Accredited by the Guild of Complementary Practitioners in 1997. They offer a three year post graduate diploma course in the Philosophy of Phytobiophysics.
INTAPSY International Association of Psychodynamic Psychotherapists. Are members of the World Council of Psychotherapy. They are registered with the Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) as Vocational Training Provider (registration no. 9727).
ION Institute for Optimum Nutrition.
IRCH International Register of Consultant Herbalists and Homoeopaths. New name of General Council and Register of Consultant Herbalists.
ISFSCH The Imperial School of Feng Shui and Chinese Horoscopes
ISHTA Integrated Sciences of Hatha, Tantra and Ayurveda.
Isis Academy Limited Isis Academy is a member of the Complementary Medical Association. Their diplomas are recognised, and the student will be able to obtain Professional Liability Insurance.
ISM Institute of Spiritual Mediums. An organisation dedicated to the promotion, teaching and development of spiritual communication. Members who are working mediums of experience may apply for Registration as an Approved Medium (RAM) of the institute. This requires a high standard of ability, detailed knowledge of Spiritualism and Mediumship.
ITA Institute of Transactional Analysis. Is the professional body which sets standards of competence and ethical practice for qualified and training Transactional Analysts in Britain. It is a member organisation of the UKCP and is affiliated to the EATA. It holds a register of qualified practitioners around Britain.
ITEC International Therapy Examination Council.
IVAS The International Veterinary Acupuncture Society.

KFRP Kinesiology Federation Registered Practitioner. The Kinesiology Federation endorses the training and qualifications only of its KFRP and Associate members.
KF Assoc KF Associate - first level of professional membership. The Kinesiology Federation endorses the training and qualifications only of its KFRP and Associate members.
KRI Kundalini Research Institute. All UK Kundalini Yoga teachers would have been approved by the Institute.

L

LCA The Life Coaching Academy. The Academy has its roots in personal development and has been at the forefront of UK Life Coach Training for over two years.

VCTC The Vocational Training Charity Trust began in 1962 providing the first high level national qualification in Natural Beauty Therapy. VetFFHom/VetMFHom The Faculty of Homeopathy. It was incorporated by Act of Parliament in 1950. Both organisations work closely together to ensure that the benefits of homeopathy are available to all.
